5S involves individuals through the use of discipline and standards. It’s not just housekeeping as some may think. 5S is about teaching the workforce to concentrate on maintaining the standards used to manage the organization. By having pride in their workplace everyone wins.
The 5 Steps of 5S are as follows:
- Sort - sort and separate to determine what is needed or not needed in the area.
- Straighten- organize and visually identify required job items so they are readily available to use.
- Shine- clean the equipment and work area on a regular basis in order to maintain standards.
- Standardize- determine what the work area standards should be communicate using easily to understand visual controls.
- Sustain- maintain standards and strive for continued improvement.
The 6th Step of a 6S program is SAFETY which properly used will help prevent injury and lost work time. Put a focus on ergonomics, back strains and other negative conditions.
- Either is an essential business tool used to improve plant cleanliness
- Sets the table for the company to perform Kaizen type activities
- Employees gain a sense of ownership, involvement & responsibility
- Reduced needless spending and product waste
